Objectives:

Educational Needs

This luncheon will educate attendees on the wide variety of modalities of fat removal which include invasive and non-invasive methods.  Various energy sources from laser to RF and physical modalities, such as cold and ultrasound, need to be understood and used appropriately in clinical practice.

Participants

This luncheon will primarily benefit physicians who treat excess fat or perform body contouring or are planning to add these procedures to their practice.  This includes the disciplines of dermatology, plastic surgery, and facial plastic surgery.

Background Requirements

Knowledge of liposuction techniques is useful.  Recommended reading: Lasers in Surgery and Medicine Special issue on lipolysis (2009).

Instructional Content and/or Expected Learning Outcomes

Instructional content will include wavelengths used in laser lipolysis, the essential differences and indications for modalities for fat in different regions of the body, and treatment of specific fat related problems such as cellulite.  Expected learning outcomes are knowledge of physical and energy based technologies to affect fat, knowledge of various devices in use or in study for fat destruction or reduction, and knowledge of appropriate clinical situations in which to use these technologies or methods.
