2012 Annual Conference Highlights
By Dr. Eric F.
Bernstein, M.D., M.S.E.
The ASLMS 32nd Annual
Conference was held April 18-22, 2012, 2012 in
Kissimmee, Florida. Our Annual Conference is always
exciting because of the important science and
significant new clinical applications presented by the
speakers. The ASLMS received 346 abstract submissions
and approximately 300 were selected for presentation.
Presentations on experimental and translational
research, cutaneous laser surgery, photodynamic therapy,
photobiomodulation, surgical applications and
interstitial laser therapy were given by world-class
experts creating an innovative and stimulating program
for all attendees including physicians, nurses,
scientists, engineers, and industry representatives.

This year the conference theme was
Global Innovation Exchange “Straight Talk and
Networking for Scientists and Clinical Practitioners”
and was highlighted with “straight talk” presentations
that documented new techniques, protocols and laser
systems. In addition, a special session Cutting Edge
“Laser and Skin” was included that encouraged attendees
to question dogma and to challenge our laser engineers
to shatter conventional approaches. A successful
session dedicated to international experiences in
dermatology was held to open the ASLMS to medical laser
societies outside the United States. A
Student/Post-Doc/Resident Opportunities session was held
which allowed pre-career professionals to learn about
examples of successful scientist/physician careers; we
also included a Student/Resident Lounge allowing
students to speak one-on-one to experts in the field.
Other educational opportunities were held on the topics
of photodynamic therapy, interstitial laser therapy,
scar revision, and burns and trauma.
New for 2012 was the extremely
successful “Tech Connect Non-CME Session” lead by Dr.
Roy Geronemus where 15 experts each discussed their
personal procedural and device preference. This was a “Straight
Talk Session” and was attended by over 400 people.
This session will be continued in the future and
enhanced to add more controversial topics.

Story Musgrave gave the keynote
address for the Annual Conference. It was far and away,
the best keynote speech I have ever heard, anywhere. He
got a standing ovation that lasted 10 minutes, and there
were laser surgeons with tears in their eyes
everywhere. When I selected Story to give this talk, it
was based on his CV, which reads like the
accomplishments of five outstanding individuals. It was
almost unbelievable that one person could accomplish so
much. However, these accomplishments are not the most
exceptional things about Story. He has integrated his
extraordinary experiences into a paradigm that
appreciates the wonder of what he has seen, and the
implications and responsibilities of where science is
headed, how art and literature intersect science, and
how we can change our lives for the better. I have heard
from numerous individuals who attended his talk, who
said that it has changed their view of life and altered
the way they do things - I concur. You can feel the
power and goodness inside this inspirational person.
As soon as the audio of Story’s presentation is
available, we will notify the ASLMS membership and
conference attendees. Following are links to various
books, DVD’s and other items available.

Our Annual Conference provides an
ideal venue to spur the creativity of younger members in
the Society. The Society awarded 30 medical, graduate
students and postdoctoral fellows at this year's Annual
Conference with travel grants. A special thank you to
Dr. Howard Schlossberg, Program Manager at the Air Force
Office, of Scientific Research for the grant to the
Society to support graduate student and post doctoral
fellow attendance.

The exhibit hall offered the
opportunity to bring representatives of academia,
industry and clinical practice together. With almost
1,000 attendees and 112 companies all on the same floor,
the conversations and debates continued nonstop.
Also in the exhibit hall the Society
once again presented the ePosters, a revolutionary,
all-digital viewing system. The ePoster format allowed
approximately 100 investigators to communicate their
data in a clear and concise manner without a great deal
of professional graphic help. The ePosters are
available for members to view through the Society’s Web
site.

The ASLMS seventh annual Silent
Auction raised $80,885. All net proceeds will be used
to support research in the coming years.
We would like to
recognize and thank all of the companies for donating
items for the auction and Dr. Jason Pozner for chairing
this event. We would also like to thank the ASLMS
Board Members and Silent Auction Committee members for
their assistance in recruiting items for the Silent
Auction.
This year’s conference labored to
keep the best of past conferences while incorporating
new educational objectives, novel avenues of
communication, and more time for dialogue. Our Society
has always worked to promote education to the
intermediate and advance practitioner of laser
medicine.
We again offered a comprehensive
basic course in laser medicine and a knowledge based
exam. The Fundamentals of Lasers in Health Care Course
directed by Dr. J. Stuart Nelson included leaders and
educators in our field and will serve as a model and
cornerstone to future offerings for those new to laser
medicine.
In addition to the Fundamentals of
Lasers in Health Care Course, intermediate and advanced
course offerings were held and included:
- Nursing/Allied
Health directed by Ms. Rebecca Sprague and Faye
Jenkins
- Burns and
Trauma directed by Drs. Jill Waibel and Chad Hivnor
- The Use of
Technology for Resurfacing, Rejuvenation, and
Contouring directed by Dr. Roy Geronemus

Lesions presented by Dr. Kristen Kelly
-
Optimizing Your
Practice to Survive and Thrive Even in a Down
Economy presented by Dr. Thomas Rohrer
-

Dialogue and critical discourse has
always been a favorite part of the investigative portion
of this conference. Most of the sections had ample
time and opportunity to facilitate discussion.
The educational and scientific
sessions were well received thanks to the hard work and
expert preparation of the faculty as well as questions
and interactive comments from attendees.
An outstanding group of section
chairs reviewed and selected the best abstracts for
presentation at the Annual Conference. At the Annual
Conference, they continued to work hard to ensure their
sessions ran on time and that the speakers provided
appropriate disclosures of interest to maintain our
current CME accreditation by the Accreditation Council
of Continuing Medical Education.
The Section Chairs for the 2012
Annual Conference included:
- Experimental
and Translational Research directed by Drs. Bernard
Choi and E. Duco Jansen
- Cutaneous Laser
Surgery directed by Drs. Gilly Munavalli and
Elizabeth Tanzi

- Mr. Greg Absten,
Exhibit Chair
All of these individuals deserve
great thanks from everyone in the Society for the effort
they put in to making this year's conference the best
ever! Without their support, enthusiasm, energy, and
intellect, this conference would not have been possible.
During the Plenary Session, Dr. Brian
Zelickson gave his Presidential State of the Society

Society in new and exciting directions while adhering to
the missions of its founders.
