Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Updates

The ASLMS has been collaborating with the FDA for years to provide educational meetings at the FDA. The goal of the meetings is to provide an unbiased educational forum and two-way exchange of information about lasers and related technology and the challenges of bringing technology forward.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Guidance on Cellular Therapies

The FDA published a guidance document, Regulatory Considerations for Human Cells, Tissues, and Cellular and Tissue-Based Products, for Industry and FDA staff. A Multi-Specialty FDA Stem Cell Task Force provided input to the FDA and has adopted and affirmed these guidelines for cellular therapies in aesthetic medicine. The ASLMS Board of Directors agreed to share this information on this important and evolving topic with our members.

Public Policy Update 2016

A meeting of Patients/Physicians United for Laser Safety and Efficacy Coalition (PULSE) was held in May, 2016 to discuss the development of a model bill relative to laser supervision. PULSE’s first effort was in Rhode Island where the coalition wrote a letter supporting H7743 to ensure that procedures which utilize laser and energy-based devices are performed under the on-site supervision of a physician. There are no updates on the status of H7743 at this time. Dr. Hruza reported in the August Board meeting that the PULSE Coalition is looking for other societies, primarily in different States, that want to partner to advance legislation for the regulation of lasers.
