Bonnie C. Carney, PhD Bio

carney-bonnie

My name is Bonnie Carney and I am currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the Firefighters’ Burn and Surgical Research Laboratory at MedStar Health Research Institute in Washington, DC. I got my undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2014 followed by my PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Georgetown University in February 2020. My PhD research focused on studying the mechanism behind the development of postburn dyschromic hypertrophic scarring. Through my study of scarring, I came to be involved in the ASLMS because our lab studies fractional ablative laser for the treatment of scars.

I take great interest in studying laser-based therapies for scarring because I have had the privilege of interacting with many burn survivors who tout the amazing therapeutic potential of these techniques. I am currently studying laser’s ability to alter endothelial cell transcription and function in scars, as well as its effect on expression of epidermal differentiation proteins and thus epidermis structure and function. As a basic scientist early career board member, I hope to spread the mission of the ASLMS to other scientists and expand our society’s footprint among physicians and scientists.

Outside of the lab, I enjoy playing with my niece Millie and my nephew Dexter. I play soccer and support the USWNT and Washington Spirit. I enjoy swimming, reading, and listening to podcasts.

The American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, Inc. is the world’s largest scientific organization dedicated to promoting research, education and high standards of clinical care in the field of medical laser applications. It provides a forum for the exchange of scientific information and participation in communicating the latest developments in laser medicine and surgery to clinicians, research investigators, government and regulatory agencies, and the public.
