Intense pulsed light (IPL), is a non-laser device that is widely utilized in aesthetic medicine to treat a variety of concerns. IPL is considered to be non-laser because this device utilizes a powerful flashlamp rather than a particular laser medium. Like lasers, IPL also use the theory of selective photothermolysis to gain its ability to be so versatile. IPL treatments can be applied to all body areas including: face, neck, décolleté, arms, bikini, legs and so forth. IPL technology delivers diffuse, multi-colored light utilizing a range of filters of visible and invisible light energy. The selection of the appropriate filter or wavelengths of visible and invisible light is of the utmost importance for two reasons. It allows the clinician to deliver the correct treatment for both the patient’s skin color and for the specific target or chromophore (i.e.: pigmented lesions, photodamage, acne, unwanted hair, blood vessels) of interest. The treatment is administered through a rectangular or square handpiece coupled with a cooling device and gel. Since the creation of this Intense Pulsed Light in 2003, it has become one of the most popular devices for facial rejuvenation in the aesthetic field.
