American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery Announces New Officers

Murad Alam, MD, MSCI, MBA, is the new President of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS).

Wausau, WI Murad Alam, MD, MSCI, MBA was introduced as President of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) during the annual Business Meeting on April 15, 2023. ASLMS is the world's largest professional organization dedicated to promoting research, education, and high standards of clinical care in the field of medical laser and energy-based applications.

alam-muradDr. Alam is Vice-Chair of Dermatology; Professor of Dermatology, Otolaryngology, and Surgery; and Chief of the Section of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery, at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

He is an author of over 250 scientific publications, editor of Archives of Dermatological Research, and serves as associate editor on a number of other publications. His research, which includes clinical trials and multicenter cohort studies, addresses the effectiveness, side effects, and patient acceptance of different laser, cosmetic, and surgical treatments. Dr. Alam has a particular interest in evidence-based medicine, including the selection and measurement of outcomes.

Dr. Alam has established several initiatives for his term, including the expansion of ASLMS research through collaborative clinical research. “There is a potential to further grow our research footprint by engaging more of our members in collaborative clinical research, such as retrospective and prospective cohort studies and ongoing registries,” said Alam. “All the information regarding the volume of patients we treat can serve a common good. The studies that come out of this research will demonstrate the value of lasers and energy devices, grow the market for industry partners, bring credit to the Society, and above all, engage all of our own members. “

Dr. Alam succeeds Paul M. Friedman, MD, who now serves as the Society’s Past President. The 2023-24 ASLMS Executive Committee also includes President-Elect Arisa E. Ortiz, MD; Vice President Ashish C. Bhatia, MD, FAAD, FASLMS; Secretary Kristen M. Kelly, MD; Treasurer Omar A. Ibrahimi, MD, PhD; and Historian J. Stuart Nelson, MD, PhD.

Other new members of the Board include representatives for Biomedical Engineering, Merete Haedersdal, MD, PhD, DMSc; Laser Medicine, Shlomit Halachmi, MD, PhD; and Nursing/Allied Health, Rebecca L. Sprague, RN, NP-C.
