Wausau, WI (May 24, 2024)—Currently, no treatment modality for festoons is considered consistently reliable as a gold standard. This study explores the noninvasive method of percutaneous delivery of liquid tetracycline using a thermomechanical device for patients seeking help with festoons. Conducted at two private clinics in Israel, the retrospective analysis included 20 patients and demonstrated significant improvements in festoon severity, patient satisfaction, and quality of life.

This study, led by Margarita Safir, MD, is titled, “Percutaneous delivery of liquid tetracycline using a thermal resurfacing drug delivery system for the treatment of festoons.”  The clinical report, published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine (LSM), the official journal of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, Inc. (ASLMS), was selected as the May 2024 Editor’s Choice.

“Festoons are challenging to treat and can significantly affect the quality of life of many patients,” Safir said. “Percutaneous delivery of liquid tetracycline via the Tixel device has been successfully implemented in our clinics with good results and high patient satisfaction, and we wanted to share our results with our colleagues.”

This non-invasive treatment approach not only reduced festoon visibility but also enhanced patient comfort and satisfaction, demonstrating lasting results for up to four months post-treatment. These promising findings suggest a new and effective option for managing festoons, potentially transforming current treatment standards.

Dr. Safir is an ophthalmologist at Shamir Medical Center at Tel Aviv University School of Medicine in Israel.
