An Early Career Scientist Student Board Representative Perspective

"My journey with ASLMS began when I was nominated as the Early Career Scientist Student Board Representative in 2024. Serving in this role has been one of the most valuable and transformative experiences of my graduate career.

Through ASLMS, I had the opportunity to present my research, receive insightful feedback from experts in the field, and exchange ideas with a diverse community of surgeons, physicians, nurses, professors, researchers, and students. The Annual Conference provided an exceptional environment for both professional development and scientific inspiration.

As a student board representative, I was able to engage deeply with the ASLMS community and gain firsthand understanding of how an academic society operates—how initiatives are planned, decisions are made, and missions are carried forward. Beyond that, I had the privilege of promoting our Society to colleagues, research groups at other conferences, and even my alma mater in Korea, helping to connect young researchers around the world to the ASLMS network.

This role has greatly expanded my professional network, enhanced my leadership and communication skills, and allowed me to contribute to the Society that plays a vital role in advancing laser medicine and surgery.

I strongly encourage students and early career researchers who are passionate about light- and laser-based science to take on this position. It is a rare opportunity to be part of a dynamic and supportive community, to learn from leaders across disciplines, and to take a meaningful step forward in both career and personal growth.

A Resident/Fellow Student Board Representative Perspective

"I started my journey with ASLMS as a resident seeking to learn from experts in laser surgery both nationally and internationally. ASLMS provides free membership for trainees and has numerous educational resources and opportunities to get involved with the Society. When I joined ASLMS, I got involved with the New Beginnings program, where ASLMS members provide free laser treatment to remove branding tattoos for human trafficking survivors. New Beginnings has been an incredibly rewarding program to contribute to. I have also served on the IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity Activities) and Membership Committees. As a Board Member, I've been able to represent these programs and committees and share my perspective on how ASLMS can optimize the experience of members, especially of trainees. By serving on the Board, I deeply appreciated all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to run a successful society and plan an impactful conference. Serving on the Board has been one of the most informative experiences I have had, and I highly encourage other trainees to consider this position in the future."
